Cities are giant systems with countless subsystems, all of whic depend on electric power and hardware to move people and things, collect data and exchange information. It is impossible to build an efficient urban infrastructure without reliable access to electricity and the many types of hardware that enable data collection. The IEC provides the majority of the International Standards needed to safely interconnect and automate much of the city infrastructure that generates or uses electricity and contains electronics.
